Durness Paintings. Iceland Paintings.
This is a selection of work from both Durness, Sutherland, and my second home of Reykjavik, Iceland, where I have spent the winter for the past twelve years. Whilst there are similarities in the landscape, there are also many differences. Proximity to the sea is essential to my work. Walking on the beach, studying the movement of the sea, the birdlife, and the everchanging shoreline is both a form of meditation and inspiration.
I prefer to make drawings and colour studies in the landscape, which I then develop back in my studio. Paintings are also sometimes the distillation of memory and imagination, based on thirty years of living and working on the north coast of Sutherland.
